More Information about The Midnight Dancers!
Let me just say that this is in honor of Rose Brier's upcoming birthday. ;)
I've been wanting to start a new topic about The Midnight Dancers, since the old post is so far down the blog now. Then tonight, I just decided to start putting up more information about The Midnight Dancers on the FairyTaleNovels.com page, including a mock version of the cover. (We'll probably change quite a bit about the background, but we love the photo.) Go check out the new site, which includes a short summary of the book, and also check out the Question Area, which hopefully now incorporates all the questions asked so far (and the answers!). Then go ahead with any further questions in the comment boxes! As usual, I'll do my best to answer them. And say a prayer for the book, which I hope to have published this coming summer!
Enjoy!!!!!
Comments
The cover is soooo cool. Thank you so much for this. I'm so, so, soooo excited!
~Mae
P.S. When did Burrito start juggling? I'm guessing its in this book that we get to find out if Paul decided to go in for acupuncture or Western medicine?
And anonymous, I love Paul too, but Fish was most definitely the one who was meant for Rose!
THANK YOU for that summary! I'm going to print it off and read it to my sister. :P (We'll probably be up half the night talking about it.)
~Claire(Mae's sister)
How old is Paul in this book again?
A.H.
A: I believe in high school, though I'm not sure on this point yet.
Q: I'm guessing its in this book that we get to find out if Paul decided to go in for acupuncture or Western medicine?
A: Yes. Being that he is financially disadvantaged, I believe his choice is determined by what the Army will pay for.
Q: I like the style of the lettering for the title.
A: Though you didn't ask, I believe the font is called "A Yummy Apology" and you can find it online.
Q: BTW, is that girl on the cover related to you?
A: No, but she is a family friend. :)
Q: Do you know when it is going to come out?
A: Sometime during the summer, we hope -- just pray!
Q: One more question, why does Paul get picked to find out what the girls are doing? Does Paul already know this family or is there another mystery of how he is somehow linked to this family?
A: I don't believe I can answer this question yet. Whenever I post Chapter One (probably not until June! So don't ask till then!) some of this will become clear.
Q: How old is Paul in this book again?
A: I believe he's about 22 years old, but I won't be sure on that point till I finish this rewrite of the book.
ps, the cover looks great the way it is, i think :) could you maybe make it so we could see a larger image of it??? like you did with waking rose??? thanks :)
As for getting a larger cover, I'm going to wait until I get some better background images before doing that. :)
Peace and good
Regina
i want to read the first chapter sooo bad!
And, yes, the earings fit perfictly! (Wish I had some like that!)
God Bless!
-Emily
I'm so glad you now have an actual summery of the book!
regina, are you going to be putting up any secret doors for the midnight dancers anytime soon?!
Also, I don't think I'll be putting up any secret doors soon. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say maybe in the spring. I just have too many other things to work on before then!
I know the original fairy tale doesn't really have a villain. Does this mean that this story won't be a thriller or have any life threatening situations in it like your SWaRR trilogy? Or will it be a nice summer romance, maybe overcoming a few domestic problems. Hey i'm not complaining, I like those too, but I was just wondering based on the fairy tale.
~~Theresa~~
P.S. Love the cover and can't wait for the book.
Thank you!
Oh, and I think that's a mermaid statue in the background..... interesting...
A: Well, I wouldn't go so far as to say it *that*. I find it hard to write a book if there's no danger of death. But, well, it's true that there's less chance of characters losing lives in this book. Still, I don't think it's any less exciting at the ending. :)
Oh, and I did manage to come up with a villain, though I can't say more than that. :)
Q: Do you remember what website you downloaded the "A Yummy Apology" font from? I want to download it but I was hoping I could get it from a site I know is secure!
A: Actually I borrowed it from my sister. I'll have to buy it at some point before the book is published to cover my copyright. But you can buy it just about anywhere online. I think I've bought from fonts.com before or someplace similar...
Oh, I hope there is some danger of death! I know this sounds mean, but I love books where the main character (or favorite) almost dies. (Reason why the whole plastic bag over Rose's head thing was so exciting.) It is really neat (well, not neat, but you know...) when they come within a hair of dying. The best ones are desperatly wounded or sick, and just barely survive. And still yet the reason why I love books like Martin the Warrior, Mossflower, Redwall, Gone For Soldiers, The Last Full Measure, Gods and Generals, The Lord of the Rings, The Fairy Tale novel series, Nancy Drew, etc.
BTW, in Nancy Drew, my sisters' and I's favorite books were when something bad happened to Nancy. (Like, almost dying). One's where nothing happened to her were brushed off as "boring".
Martin, from Martin the Warrior and Mossflower, is a particularily satisfying character, because he nearly dies in both books.
And The Last Full Measure, Gods and Generals and my special favorite, Gone For Soldiers I really like. Even though they are about real events and people, real people still have brushes with death. (They are about the Civil War and the Mexican War, which by the way was only fifteen years before the Civil War.) Robert E. Lee (General), is my very favorite historical character. (He stars in all three, and in Killer Angels, which is between LFM, and GaG.) And yes, I am from the north, and I am a huge fan of a Southern Confederate general. (who was against secession AND slavery by the way!)
Goodness me, that is long! I should get my own blog and write all this down instead of taking up space on Regina's blog, which is what I am doing if I keep typing here... *gasp at dreadful thought*. Regina, can you run out of space on your website?!?!?!? No, don't tell me, I don't want to know... No wait, yes I do! No I... do/don't!
Good bye!
Ps. Does any one else have favorite books like the ones I mentioned? Do share the titles, please do!
I know exactly what you mean. I enjoy books more when possible death hovers over one of the characters. You should look at Allen French's books. For example, The Red Keep and the Lost Baron. Also, the Reb and the Redcoats, Rifles for Watie and the Scarlet Pimpernel. They are some of my favorites. They are all living history books(my favorite) and you can find some of them at Emmanuel Books I'm pretty sure. The others you have to look for. Another greaat author is James Fenimore Cooper. The Spy:A Tale of Neutral Ground is one you would like. It is my favorite. He is most known for his famous Leatherstocking Tales. They are good books too. I hope that helps you out.
I am praying for your baby Regina, when is she/he due again? Have a wonderful day. Oh, and I'll remember your birthday!
~Claire(Mae's sister)
I love the cover! I think Rachel looks gypsy-like - so mysterious and exotic.
The scene with Rose and Fish in Mr. Freet's basement is still my favorite scene in the series. Regina, it is such a great moment!
Anyway, books. "The Blue Castle" by L. M Montgomery, one of my all time favorite books, has some good moments of suspense and excellent writing throughout. A very sweet story from the author of the Anne of Green Gable books.
"Crown Duel" by Sherwood Smith is based in an imaginary world, but it is about a war and the aftermath and who will be the next ruler as seen through the eyes of a young lady involved throughout.
"Letzenstein Chronicles" by Meriol Trevor. They are considered more 12-14 year-old reads, but I still enjoy them immensely. About a tiny country between France and GErmany during the early 19th century. A lot of political upheaval.
"Borrowed House" by Hilda van Stockum and "Enemy Brothers" by Constance Savery are two excellent WWII stories set in Holland and England respectively.
"The Scarlet Pimpernel" by Baroness Emmuska Orczy has like a dozen sequels. Most of them are on par with the first, though a few of them had slow pacing if I remember correctly.
If you like/ don't mind some fantasy, I know at least a dozen more titles, but I don't want to keep going if you don't really enjoy that genre.
I tried to list only books that had a good element of danger or suspense. Did you mean books in general?
Thanks!
really good WWII books, Carol Matas, she wrote 'after the war' and tons of other books, 'rilla of ingleside' L.M. Montgomery [the last in the anne of green gables series] dragons in our midst, which is a series by some christian author, i don't remember his name but the books r awesome, and some of the 'dear america' diaries are very good too, i've gotten the one about the thirteen year bride of a coal miner like twelve times. most of my favorite suspence novels r by me and my friends tho, its too much fun to make up your own stories :) i also like louisa may alcott's stuff too :), 2 more titles, 'trouble river' and 'pierced by a sword'
dominque :)
lover of football, and sotires by regina doman :)
I have read the Letzenstine Chronicles, Borrowed House and Enemy Brothers, all very good!
To be fair, I'll list some more of my favorite books.
First of, The "Redwall" series, is my second favorite series in the whole world! (Fairy Tale novels is my first.) There are a lot of great books in that series, in fact there are only two that I *don't like*. (I think there are about 20 books, with more coming!) The books are written by Brian Jaques, a British Catholic author! You know, it always seems so much more exciting when you have a favorite author who is English and then turns out to be a devout Catholic. It just seems so neat, because of King Henry the VIII and all. I can still remember how ecstatic I was when I found out that Tolkien was Catholic. (BTW, one of Tolkien's sons became a priest! :) Anyhow, Brian Jaques wrote the "Redwall" series, and the "Castaways of the Flying Dutchman" series. It was from the later series that I figured out he was Catholic, he never mentioned Protestants anywhere, and each book had some element of Catholocisim in it, sure mark of a Catholic author! The first series doesn't have any traces of Catholocisim, or religion, because the characters are all animals, and he didn't want to have any religion in thier, understandably.
"Midshipman Quinn" and "The Flying Ensiging", both by Showal Styles, (or something strange like that), are both good.
The "Phantom Stallion" series, by Terry Farley, are all pretty good, though no one ever comes close to dying, except the "Phantom Stallion", a few times. (Okay, so the lead human character does get jumped on by a cougar...)
*thinks to self, "Okay, must get ready for speech class."*
All right, real fast here...
Yes, I love fantasy! But I do not like Shakespear, or boring books like him. (Oh fine, they are okay, but definately NOT "edge of your seat". I am reading "King Lear" ONLY because Rose was in it.)
*laughes and thinks to self, "I am I going to get it when Shakespear fans of my aquaintance read that!"*
And any of your favorite books in general would be great! When I have time, I'll list more of my favorites, too. (Sort of like a 'book exchange').
BTW, Regina, I just thought I'd mention that my entire homeschool group is turning into a "Fairy Tale Novels" fan group! If they haven't read them, they have definately heard of them! I've had a couple people say to me, "I haven't read those books, but I have heard a lot about them".
Must run!
*starts thinking up a list of names to guess*
I'll be thinking of a "favorite books list" :)
Joanna F.
Lady Rose ~ My brother absolutely loves Showell Styles's books, particularly the "Midshipman Quinn" series. He got them for Christmas and immediately made me read them. They are a lot of fun.
I discovered Redwall years ago. My favorites are Triss, Taggerung, Loamhedge, and The Long Patrol. "Rakkety Tam" was the last one that I read. I gave my brother copies of the first two "Castaway" books and he said that they were excellent, but I still haven't got around to them.
Shakespeare is an acquired taste for many. I actually dislike pretty much every plotline that he has, so I am probably just not cultured enough, but I still love reading them for the sheer joy of the language he uses. Fear not. I shall suggest no books like his. (Which knocks out like half of my bookshelf.)
So, you do like fantasy. Wonderful. Have you ever read any Lloyd Alexander or Eoin Colfer. Alexander's Prydain Chronicles and Vespar Holly adventure series are both well-written, hunorous and have plenty of danger. Colfer is not to everyone's taste, but I still vastly enjoy his Artemis Fowl series. *waits for the shrieks of condemnation. winces. Can't help it because I do like them and I have an essay explaining why if you want it. Too many years of Seton-they're getting to me*
Patricia C. Wrede has some very funny and dangerous/suspenseful books but only like seven of them are any good and those you have to be the type that can accept "witches" in fantasy for. If Harry Potter is the epitome of evil because it has witches in it, those are definitely ones you won't want to read. Just a friendly warning.
Dragon Slippers by Jessica George Day is fun, clean and has some danger.
Oxygen by Olson and the poor man whose name I always forget is an awesome suspense/ dangerous-situation book. Is sci-fi, but well researched possible sci-fi.
Okay, books in general. Wow, maybe I could just email you a list, because I don't want to clutter this post.
I like classics, lot of "children's" fiction, fantasy/ sci-fi, and anything practically ever written by Tolkien, Lewis or Chesterton. Belloc is pretty good too. Some exceptions do apply. You'll have to let me know if you want this to go on.
I also LOVE historical fiction, probably even more than fantasy. (Okay, more than fantasy!)
BTW, it is ironic while I am not a huge fan of Shakespear or anything, my family owns all of Shakespears plays, yes! all of them!
Is North and South about the Civil War? I am a total Civil War Nut, (as a t-shirt I once saw said.) Although my favortie t-shirt that I have seen, was one that had a Confederate flag on it, and it said: "If this flag offends you, study American History!" (I have told that one would be perfect for me. :)
Gotta go, it's my sister's birthday! (She is nine years old.)
God Bless y'all!
Ps. As soon as I get a Google acount, I will definately join the guess the name game!
Anyway, "North and South" is not about the Civil War, as interesting as that would be. The title refers to the Northern and Southern regions of England that were deeply divided in the 19th century. The North was rapidly becoming an industrially based economy, while the South was staying a rural agriculturally supported economy. The book focuses on Margaret and Mr. Thornton, from the South and North respectively, and it examines their differences which sometimes are closely entertwined with their regional backgrounds. Really is a great read.
Unlike some of the others here, I could not sincerely enjoy the Masterpiece theater version because I felt that the actress who portrayed Margaret had as much talent (or at least employed in this film as much talent) as a dead fish. Her idea of expression was to move her eyebrows. She seemed lifeless, totally devoid of emotion, and it was painful because I did like her character in the book and had been looking forward to the movie, only to be disappointed. Richard Armitrage (last name is undoubtedly misspelt) gives a superb performance as Mr. Thornton that almost, but not quite, makes up for Margaret's character's dismal interpretation.
anyway its a great movie

I wanted to do something special for the forum's opening, so I won't be answering any guesses on this site, sorry!
dominique :)
Do any of their names begin with A,B,C,D,E,F or G?
Are they all English names, or are some of them associated with a particular country or language?
Are all, none, or some of them saint/biblical names?
- GKC lover
Several of them are Biblical names.
They are pretty varied for origin, but most have become fairly assimilated into American culture.
One starts with B, one with C, and one with a D.
Happy Guessing!
Fine with me! Go ahead and guess! (My main problem is not having time to moderate two guessing games!)
Fine with me! Go ahead and guess! (My main problem is not having time to moderate two guessing games!)
Okay, for D: Delilah, Deborah/Debra, um... (nead to refresh my memory on biblical names!)
Am I correct that Rachel is one of the biblical names?
dominique
Regina said to remember that there are two families, so one half of the names are Biblical, like Rachel and Deborah, and the other half are of a different sort.
As far as I can remember, none of the Bible names are ever used as place names in the Bible.

- AutumnRose, formerly GKC lover
So it's Rachel, Rebecca, Deborah, Lydia, Miriam and Pricilla. I can't wait to tell my sister that there is a character who shares her name! (Spelled the same way too!)

i definetly use names in stories that i wouldn't use in real life but that's half the fun...
like Xylina, who's really gonna use that in real life?
the funness of names continues :)
dominique
Don't feel bad that this is taking so long...we listed dozens and dozens of names before we'd get even one right, and we had hints from Regina! (Two of them are names that I don't think I've ever seen someone have, but they aren't really obscure or historically or ethnically significant, so don't go too overboard with guessing. That was one of our biggest problems in the beginning.)
Priscilla and Deborah were guessed earlier, but are names of some of the girls.
The last two(Wow, only two left!)are a bit more uncommon in my opinion. Do any of you guys (or ladies more accurately) want any hints?
And a very blessed and serene Advent to all!
