Questions about Fish's Other Book

Because some of you on The Midnight Dancers post below are asking about the partially-written book starring Fish, I'm going to post a new topic for this and repeat some of the questions already asked.

regina doman wrote:

I do have a partially written book about Fish that takes place before Waking Rose begins, but Rose is barely in it. Plus I've used Fish as a minor character in a draft of another unpublished book. But right now, there's no other book in the works with lots of Rose and Fish.

Joanna wrote:

Hi, I had a question, but it's not about Midnight Dancers, but I hope you won't mind answering it. I was just wondering which fairy tale the book about Fish is based on? I can't think of many fairy tales where a prince is the main charecter. Is it the Prince and the Pauper, or is it a fariy tale without royalty as the main charecters? Thanks, Joanna F.

Hmm, I think I might have to make you guess that. If it helps, Fish does not take the role of a "prince" in this tale. He's just a common servant.

Joanna wrote:

I'm so sorry I didn't clarify what story I was asking about. What I meant to ask was whether Faithful Johannes was the tale that Fish's partially written book is based on. Then if it wasn't, if Fish's story is based on a more well known story. Sorry about the mistake, Joanna F.

regina doman said....

Ah, now I see and understand! No, it's not Faithful Johannes (or The Prince and the Pauper, which is actually a novel by Mark Twain, not a fairy tale). I would say it is a more well-known fairy tale.

Could the fairy tale possibly be Cinderella? Or in Fish's case, Cinder-fellow?

Hi,

Could it possibly be Cinderella, only with a boy being the main charecter?

If not, I'm guessing it is a Grimms' tale though, right?

Is it based on the fairy tale The Brave Little Tailor? You said that it takes place before Waking Rose is it before The Shadow of the Bear as well? Also, is the book about Kateri and Alex based on a fairytale?

Thanks and God Bless,

hey Regina! let me just say i loved waking rose! and I guess beacuse i love the characters so much i just dont want their story to end...but i was just wondering if you have ever considered writing a second book about Rose and Fish based on the fairytale Beauty and the Beast. And having it be about Rose helping Fish through his inner struggles since she is whole and beautiful while Fish feels broken and ugly. maybe not even having alot of action but having it be a simple love story about the two of them and how she helps fish grow emotionally and spiritually. I'm sorry if this comment is really off the topic of this blog!

I'm not sure how you can answer this, but if it's a book about Fish, that takes place before Waking Rose, how can the ending be happy? I mean, it seems he's not really at peace until the very end of Waking Rose, and to leave "Book 5" hanging with him still being sad and all that would be kind of awkward... it's a rather complicated question; I hope you can understand it! :)

Wow, lots of comments! Sorry it took me a while to get to these (we had no electrity yesterday, kind of hard to blog without it!):

Q: Could the fairy tale possibly be Cinderella? Or Cinder-fellow?

A: No, it's not Cinderella (actually, I really don't care for that story! Besides, *everyone* does it).

Q: If not, I'm guessing it is a Grimms' tale though, right?

A: Yes. Love the Brothers' Grimm, mainly for their simple bluntness.

Q: Is it based on the fairy tale "The Brave Little Tailor"?

A: No, but I do love that story.

Q: You said that it takes place before Waking Rose. Is it before The Shadow of the Bear as well?

A: No, it takes place between Black as Night and Waking Rose.

Q: Also, is the book about Kateri and Alex based on a fairytale?

A: Yes, but not a Grimm's tale. I'll have to start another topic for that one!

Q: Is Helene involved?

A: Aha!

Though I'm still not sure that I won't change her name...

Q: I was just wondering if you have ever considered writing a second book about Rose and Fish based on the fairytale Beauty and the Beast. And having it be about Rose helping Fish through his inner struggles since she is whole and beautiful while Fish feels broken and ugly.

A: You know, you are the second person who's suggested that. I don't know, I might have to start considering it... The main problem I see with the story is that the plot of Beauty and the Beast really does turn on the fact that the Beast is a complete unknown to Beauty, whereas of course, Fish is not an unknown to Rose: by the end of Waking Rose, she knows him pretty well. But I'll keep thinking about it. (BTW this interim book is *not* based on Beauty and the Beast, to be clear.)

Q: I'm not sure how you can answer this, but if it's a book about Fish, that takes place before Waking Rose, how can the ending be happy?

A: You're right, it is a much darker book than Waking Rose, and doesn't have as strong a happy ending, but I like to think that it's satisfying. It mainly works because, as I said, Fish is not in the role of the "prince/hero" in the story (although he is still a main character).

It's actually a pretty creepy fairy tale/story. (Just as Snow White is actually a pretty creepy fairy tale: thank God for the dwarves, or it would be really black!)

OMG! now i'm totally going to try and find out which fairy tale it is! [alex and kateri's tale]a hunting i shall go, by the bye, i think i'm not the only one when i say you need a story about steven, one of the least talked about, or writen about main characters or re-occuring characters in all the books :) thanks for the awsome stories
regina doman said…
I've thought about doing Steven, but he needs more of a plot...

BTW The fairy tale for Fish's Other Book is NOT an obscure one. You have all heard of it.
Anonymous said…
ok, i went fairy tale hunting, you'll know who this is cause i already emailed you this question on the waking rose page, if fish's tale 'the ugly duckling'? and i was thinking, i love the arabian nights stories... it'd be great if you did a modern story with one of them... maybe steven's??? just saying... thanks! :)

the most annoying fan in the world, again... in black as night they talked alot about through the looking glass and alice in wonderland... are you ever going to write a story using that? and if so will it be kateri's and alex's???

Okay, I have a few guesses for which fairytale "Fish's" book is based off of: Is it "The Three Snake Leaves", "Puss in Boots","The Frog King" (a.k.a. The Frog Prince) or "The Riddle"?

Maybe I am not up on my Grimm fairytales, but I am having a mental block on thinking up more tales, that have not already been guessed, that involve a servant character and of which "everyone" has heard . Wait, is the servant character part of the fairytale Fish's story is based on?

So, just to be clear, Helene, or the equivalent of her character with a different name, will be in Fish's story. Correct? Does Fish's story have any sort of working title?

Oh, and I saw that someone suggested that you could write another story about Fish and Rose based off of "Beauty and the Beast." I thought that was interesting because in my Grimm Fairytale collection, that story is called "Winter Rose." Not sure how well that would actually work though.

Lastly, when I read that you might one day write another book continuing Fish and Rose's story as a married couple, I was so excited! That would be so wonderful! 'A dream come true...'

Is the fairytale for Fish's book The Fisherman and his wife, with Fish as the fish, who is also an enchanted prince?

Is it, by any chance, Jack the Giant-Killer (or Jack and the Beanstalk)? After all, you did say it was one we all heard of...

We are trying to guess what "well-known fairy tale" Fish's book could possibly be...

Hansel and Gretel?
The Frog Prince?
Rumpelstiltskin? (I know someone guessed this for Kateri's book, but you didn't say this one wasn't from it!)

Can't wait to see your answers!
Thanks for sharing such art with us...

Hi everyone! Sorry I didn't get to these until now!

Q: Is fish's tale 'the ugly duckling'?

A: No. I think that would be a little silly...

Q: i love the arabian nights stories... it'd be great if you did a modern story with one of them... maybe steven's???

A: I love those stories too! But Fish's story is not from the Arabian Nights (still keeping Steven in mind ... he might be in this book, btw... would be a nice place to put him).

Q:In Black as Night they talked alot about through the looking glass and alice in wonderland... are you ever going to write a story using that?

A: I don't think so. But I do love Lewis Carroll and I've thought of doing a real-life story of his life...someday!

Q: will it be kateri's and alex's???

A: Alas, no.

Q: Hmm...could it be Jack and the Beanstalk??

A: That would be interesting! But no.

Q: I think I have it!! Is it Aladin???

A: No.

Q: Is it "The Three Snake Leaves", "Puss in Boots","The Frog King" (a.k.a. The Frog Prince) or "The Riddle"?

A: No. No. No. No. Some of these are too obscure. (You HAVE heard of this one.)

Q: I am having a mental block on thinking up more tales, that have not already been guessed, that involve a servant character and of which "everyone" has heard . Wait, is the servant character part of the fairytale Fish's story is based on?

A: Yes. The servant character is only a minor character in this fairy tale. Yet he/she plays an imnportant role...

Q: Just to be clear, Helene, or the equivalent of her character with a different name, will be in Fish's story. Correct?

A: Yes. She is the main character, but not the title character.

Q: Does Fish's story have any sort of working title?

A: Um, no. I'm actually having trouble with that part...

Q: Is the fairytale for Fish's book The Fisherman and his wife, with Fish as the fish, who is also an enchanted prince?

A: Ooh, that's an INTERESTING idea. But no!

Q: Hansel and Gretel?

A: No.

Rumpelstiltskin? (I know someone guessed this for Kateri's book, but you didn't say this one wasn't from it!)

A: Claire and Sarah, you got it! RUMPLESTILSKIN is its name!

(Well, at least that's the name of the fairy tale the book will be based on!)

Good job everyone!

Ooooh! :D

So, does this story involve blackmail? *wiggles her eyebrows*
Anonymous said…
GAH! i should have guessed it! but i was thinking of title characters and since fish isn't old and rumplistilskin [i probablly spelled it wrong] is i didn't make the connection... but now i get it.. its freet right? and i read the original twelve dancing princess... will there be no villian in this story??? cause there really isn't [besides the naughty princesses]
Anonymous said…
you said something about wanting a song for this story possibly... and i thought of one or two... its really hard to know when you don't know what the plot is... not that i'm going to ask you... but here goes, if you're keeping with the dancing theme there's a song on josh groban's latest cd 'awake' called so she dances, i don't know if it would make sense on a piece of paper, and then there's this band called 'the afters' and their cd beautiful love has alot of good songs, in fact one that i thought would be perfect for fish and rose called 'until the world' just thought i'd tell you :)

Oh cool, Rumplestilskin! I'm guessing Fish is going to play the part of the mesenger who hears Rumplestilskin singing, right? I can't think of a way to modernize it, so I can't wait to read it! Do you have any idea when Fish's book might come out?
Thanks, Joanna F.

Q: Does this story involve blackmail? *wiggles her eyebrows*

A: Of a sort... (*wiggling brows back*)

Q: The villain is Freet right?

A: Of course it can't be. Mr. Freet is in jail. (And if he had been up to something else nasty, you can be sure it would have been mentioned in the courtroom scene in Waking Rose.)

Q: I'm guessing Fish is going to play the part of the mesenger who hears Rumplestilskin singing, right?

A: Astute guess!

Q: Do you have any idea when Fish's book might come out?

A: I'm going to guess ... 2009? (I know, you all hate me now...)

Actually, I was expecting you to say 2010 or later since Fish's book is only partially written. Hearing 2009 makes me happy! :-) Also I was wondering if Fish is going to get a bigger part than just looking for "Rumplestilskin's" name? Is there going to be spinning straw into gold in your story?

Thanks, Joanna F.

Q: Also I was wondering if Fish is going to get a bigger part than just looking for "Rumplestilskin's" name?

A: Oh, definitely. But I can't tell you much more.

Q: Is there going to be spinning straw into gold in your story?

A: Not literally. Again, can't say more (especially because I am working on that part).

I am intrigued now. I have no idea how you are going to do Fish's story, but I look forward to it eagerly.

I have to say I am a little worried as to what Fish's book will be like without Rose really being in it, but then I think that the book is a wonderful, wonderful idea and I am extremely excited to see it come out in *sigh* two more years..... Thanks again Regina!!! However I have to say, I just read a fairytale novel called Straw Into Gold by Gary D. Schimdt, in which Rumplestiltskin is actually a good guy, who was saving the Queen's son by taking him away from the weak king's advisors who would otherwise have shaped the young prince like clay to do their will. So it happened that Rumplestiltskin hated to take the child as much as the Queen hated to lose him....I won't tell you the whole plot in the case that you would want to read it yourself, but I thought it was very interesting. Not the origional tale by Grimm of course, but a good tale nonetheless. :)
Thanks again!!

Oh good, I'm so glad Fish will have a bigger part! :-) Does anything in Fish's past have anything to do with the plot? Also, will Bear and Blanche also have small apperences like Rose will? Finally, will most of the story take place New York because I believe that is where you had mentioned he met Helene?
Thanks, Joanna F.

A: Definitely.

A: Most likely.

A: I believe so. I think the story will take place at NYU, but to tell the truth, I'm not entirely settled on this...

i just thought of another song, well, i don't know how you'd use it... but its really great, i think, its another josh groban song, yes i know... but its called in her eyes and its also off the awake cd... i just thought you'd like to know

teehee.... most annoying fan is slightly in love with Josh Groban me thinks! *titters* : )I like him too! onto my question... will the "miller's daughter" be threatened with death? Does the villian threaten to take away her child?

HI. I had a question about Fish's book. You said that Rose would barely be in it. Does Fish then have no romantic interest in this book? Also I wanted to know if Bear and/or Blanche have any significant part in it. Thanks and God Bless!

P.S. Congrats on your soon to be new addition to the family!!

Hi,

I was wondering about the cover of the book. Will Fish's face be on the cover, or will it be Helene's? I hope it's Fish because Bear, Blanche, and Rose all have their faces on books, and I hope Fish is not left out.

Thanks, Joanna F.

to the person who said i am slightly in love with josh groban that is not true, he was here a couple of weeks ago in concert and it was a really good concert so that's why i thought of those songs, i could give her a trillion different song ideas but those were the most fairytale-ish ones i culd think of :)

ha! i thought of another song and its not by josh groban, its called bless the broken road by rascal flatts. i don't know if you have anything against country but even if you do its a pretty good song, and if you don't mind country [or if you absolutely hate it] i would suggest anything by alison krauss, just to listen to, not even to put in a book. she has one of the prettiest voices i've ever heard and she's not hard to listen to, she's not even really country she's more bluegrass. :)

Hi,

I'm not sure if you are looking for a song for any of your books, but the song "I Have a Dream" by ABBA is a very pretty song. I thought it could be kind of cool since it mentions fairytales in it.

Just thought I'd let you know,

Ooh! How about Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You?" This would be especially great if Helene wasin love with Fish! (But then he lost interest.)

Once again, it is a country soung, but definately a "Classic".

"Rose" (my confirmation name:)

Just another song suggestion. "Bless the Broken Road". I know that several artists have performed it, but the version that I have is by Rascal Flatts.

"Bless The Broken Road"

I set out on a narrow way many years ago
Hoping I would find true love along the broken road
But I got lost a time or two
Wiped my brow and kept pushing through
I couldn't see how every sign pointed straight to you

[Chorus:]
Every long lost dream led me to where you are
Others who broke my heart they were like Northern stars
Pointing me on my way into your loving arms
This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you

I think about the years I spent just passing through
I'd like to have the time I lost and give it back to you
But you just smile and take my hand
You've been there you understand
It's all part of a grander plan that is coming true

[Chorus]

Now I'm just rolling home
Into my lover's arms
This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you

That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you.

I thought that overall, the lyrics were quite apropos. Just a thought.
